Travellers in cities and outdoors rely on a variety of instruments from GPS devices to palm navigators to street signs, public transportation information, maps and even sunlight. Further more different means of travel require different instruments. But what if all of these could be merged seamlessly into one simple, humane guide and protector for travellers.

XXX is a robust devices that acts as a reliable aid for orientation and navigation. It adapts to various modes of travel. It can be worn on the body, attached to clothing and carried items like bags, attached to bicycles, motorbikes and car. When traveling on foot it can suggest various routes to a destination including those that make use of public transportation. It provides information regarding travel time, waiting time, costs and means of transport. Used on vehicles, it provides route information that takes into account various aspects like traffic, special roads, time of day, etc. It works both in cities and outside of cities thus can be a valuable aid for outdoorsmen and adventurers.

Just a hint of an idea .. modular structure like cubes or bricks that can be built and stacked.

Ted is a big robot bear found in a large space like a playground or a playroom. Ed is a small version of Ted that is small sitable for children's hands. Ed controls Ted.

The Children move Ed's arms and legs, head and eyes. They have complete control. Ted mimics these movements and does the same as Ed. Ed is a 'natural' remote control for Ted. Aditionally, Ted's eyes always track Ed thus always looking at the child who is controling Ted/Ed.

Idea - Tactile Interaction

Inspired by the double sided glass

double sided surface that is reactive to touch. The surface could be made of tiles that move and react to touching in a mechanical single user mode. Touching one side would create a similar sensation on the other side so two people can use the device. This would act as a moderator between children and a teacher or children and other children.

The surface would also include gaps or glass through which the 2 users could directly see each other.

For Autistic children that might find it easier to interact with others indirectly.

Alessandre is a little sad because he cannot walk around outside like he used to before his heart attack. He used to see so many tourists but now very few come to his home. He and his grandson Pepe have bough new mobile phones so they can be in touch. Pepe has a surprise for Alessandre. Pepe has discovered Babelbla and thinks it's the perfect thing for his grandpa. This technology is very new to Alessandre, but with a little help from Pepe they set his phone to record comments into Babelbla. Pepe holds his grandpa's hand and they go around the neighborhood. Alessandre remembers the old happy times he had in this neighborhood. He grew up here and lived most of his life. Alessandre records his stories about the various places that they pass. Finally after 45 minutes he and Pepe walk back home. Alessandre is tired, but he his happy that Pepe helped him to use Babelbla and that now many new tourists will be able to enjoy old Alessandre's stories.

Han Suk came to Brazil on a whim. The views are very beautiful and he has a travel guide in Korean to help him out, but that's not enough. Han Suk is lonely. The Brazilians he has met are very nice, but he can't really talk to them. Han Suk loves architecture. Yesterday he was listening to an architect guide on Babelbla and he discovered a part of the city full of old churches and beautiful old houses. He is visiting the rest of the area today so he checks to see what's nearby. He notices something new. Another Babelbla user is in this area. Furthermore, Babelbla is saying it's a Korean User. Wow .. another Korean ? In this part of Brazil ? Han Suk is excited. But he doesn't remember seeing anyone .. maybe he was too busy looking at the architecture. He walks to his left where Babelbla said the other person is. Sure enough there's a nice girl standing there. She might be Korean. Han Suk walks to her and says helloo ( maybe replace with a Korean hello )

Alessandre .. 65 ... Brasilia ..

Alessandre has lived in Brasilia most of his life. Since he was 15 he has worked in his uncle's shop and as a result has met many tourists from many different countries. He has learned several languages. He lives in an old and traditional part of the city. He knows a lot about the area and is always happy to share his knowledge with people who come exploring and visiting. Unfortunately Alessandre suffered a serious heart attack 3 years ago and has since been cannot leave this house for long periods. He still likes to meet visitors that show up now and then. His grandson, pepe, who is 15 years old lives with him.

Sven is a journalist who is traveling in South America with his girlfriend. He loves to write and share his experience. In his previous visit to India he discovered the Babelbla service. He found many audio guides who made his trip fun and rich with experiences. He found out that he can create his own guide on the service and wants to document his visit to Brazil.

Channel 1
This channel is intended for tourists and new residents of an area. It's an aid for exploration and discovery. The user is connected with a local resident or a fellow tourist from the past or present. These personae act as mentors and guides who provide information and suggestions which make an area more alive and appealing.

Additionally, the service can alert users about nearby sites that might be of interest. It allows the user to listen to a short audio description about the place which can help the user decide which areas he wants to visit. [ interface for children ]

Also, the service can connect users with other users who are present in the same site and engaged in the same type of exploration. For example it could notify a user that there is another user in the area who is from the same country or who speaks the same language. This could help users to find travel companions, to compare notes, and to en richen their experience of a place.

Another feature is that users can record and upload their own guides and suggestions to the system in order to benefit future users and to act as guides. Tourists can do this by adding 'tags' to the places that they visit. Local residents can also act as guides to their areas and neighborhoods. This allows tourists to get relevant and interesting information directly from the mouthes of residents about local events, activities, history, culture and hidden places that are worth visiting.

Users can choose the guide and audio content that they wish to follow. Moreover, they can rate guide that they use according to quality and enjoyment, providing good feedback to other users.

Furthermore, if a guide indicates that he is available and willing to meet with persons who are following his audio suggestions, the system could alert them that the guide is present and put them in contact with him.

Finally, this service can also be useful for people who move to a new area. These new residents can tap into the service and get practical guides about their new area, suggestions about which supermarket to go to, where to buy fish, where to find fresh vegetables, laundry, parks, etc ..

Name : Babelbla ..

Main Idea : Mapping audio layers on top of the current geographical location. The Audio will be relevant to the location and comes on multiple channels that have different purposes. The main channel we develop will provide information and suggestions relevant to tourists and new residents of an area.

Details of the Channels :
We envision various channels each with a different type of content and target audience. We will give full details about the first channel. The other channels are just possibilities for other uses which we will mention briefly.

Channel 1
( see attached document )

Channel 2
This is the crazy channel. The colorful channel meant to be a pleasure for the senses and for artistic expression. This channel would not include speech but would be more musical in nature. It would be open to artists to enhance an area with audio. For example, an artist could be given an area to work with, for example a park. The artist would attach all sorts of audio tags to the area for people to discover. Pleasant sounds of nature, music, sounds of animals, instruments, noise, etc.
This is mainly meant to be an audio experience related to the location.

Channel 3
The Graffiti channel. This channel would be open for everyone to use and would not be restricted in content. Residents of the city could tag areas with their comments. They could for example attach a funny mocking sound to a local advertisement that they don't like, say something about a government building or office, comment about restaurants and shops, create some information about their local neighborhood welcoming visitors or providing information, etc.

As an incentive to upload interesting and useful comment, the audio tags could be rated for popularity and posters of very popular comments could receive money or free phone services etc.

Channel 4
The shopping/gaming channel. This channel would be more commercial in nature and would include local businesses posting audio tags about their business and what users might expect to find there. It would also enable people to get more information about a business as they walk by on their daily route, without doing anything extra ordinary like stopping and looking at an add, opening a web page on a browser, or going into the shop. This might need to be managed well in order to prevent overloading the user with nonsensical audio advertisement. Additionally this channel would be used for games like treasure hunting in open spaces and streets. Users would need to collect audio clues and explore areas in order to find and collect items/treasure. Users might also need to collaborate with each other in order to get some bigger prizes. Users could also win prizes for their local community and area, encouraging people to think of the community as a whole.

Finally, the two uses could compliment one another by directing users to certain areas on certain days. For example, a treasure hunt on Thursday nights in a pub area would drive a lot of people to that area. The people could receive prizes and discounts to food and drinks in the local pubs.

Technical Details :
This service can work in all areas that have cellular coverage. No special equipment would be needed. The user would just need his mobile phone and a software/subscription to the service. The audio would be activated by pressing a button. The audio would then follow the user as he moves from area to area.

Since audio quality on phones is not amazing and people don't like holding phones next to their ears for long periods while walking, we expect this system to be used with mobile devices that have good audio quality and are connected to ear phones. This system would work with any device ( audio players ) that also have a wifi or cellular network connection.

Relevant proofs of concept:
The 3 examples that we have, sound garden, flower power, and geoVector present experimental and working examples of this concept. Also, in terms of computation and system demands the project is feasible and not excessively demanding.

Coupled with a good implementation and business plan we see good potential for this project.

Auricular - The Aural Cellular ( Temporary Name )

Main Idea : Mapping audio layers on top of the current geographical location. The Audio will be relevant to the location and comes on multiple channels that have different purposes.

Details of the Channels :
We envision various channels each with a different type of content, target audience and usage. These are just some potential examples.

Channel 1
This channel would present information in various languages. This is similar to guided audio tours in museums. However no special device is needed and there are no limits to the area in which this service works.The service could provide historical information for tourists in their local language. This is a more organized, maybe paid service.
Besides historical information this channel could provide relevant current information to residents of the city about shopping places, parks, etc. More professional usages could be added later.

Additionally, we can have a service that alerts you to nearby sites that might be of interest. It allows you to listen to a
short audio description about the place and if you go there you can have the service described above.[ interface for children ]
Also, the service can connect people from similar countries together. For example I have my auricular set to Korean and I'm
visiting the Duomo. Sang Is also there and also listening in Korean. The service could notify us that there is another person
visiting the place who speaks the same language.
Tourists can also leave audio comments about a place that they are visiting. Other tourists can listen to get a general idea
about the place ( or detailed ideas depends on what level we implement it on )

THE LOCAL CONNECTION:
local residents of an area can register to the service as 'experts' on their neighborhood. They can upload audio guides and
tourists who visit the area can access the audio guide and get information about less known and less famous areas from the
mouthes of the actually residents.As a bonus, if the expert is in the area and indicates on his phone that he is free, tourists can contact them and get a
'live' tour.Finally, the expert could be currently in New York and give a virtual audio tour to the tourist using skype or a similar
service.
Another variation on this is that the expert doesn't give historical or cultural information, but rather relevant day to day
information like " you can buy seafood there" and "this supermarket is too expensive" etc.

Channel 2
This is the crazy channel. The colorful channel meant to be a pleasure for the senses and for artistic expression. This channel would not include speech but would be more musical in nature. It would be open to artists to enhance an area with audio. For example, an artist could be given an area to work with, for example a park. The artist would attach all sorts of audio tags to the area for people to discover. Pleasant sounds of nature, music, sounds of animals, instruments, noise, etc.
This is mainly meant to be an audio experience related to the location.

Channel 3
The Graffiti channel. This channel would be open for everyone to use and would not be restricted in content. Residents of the city could tag areas with their comments. They could for example attach a funny mocking sound to a local advertisement that they don't like, say something about a government building or office, comment about restaurants and shops, create some information about their local neighborhood welcoming visitors or providing information, etc.As an incentive to upload interesting and useful comment, the audio tags could be rated for popularity and posters of very popular comments could receive money or free phone services etc.

Channel 4
The shopping/gaming channel. This channel would be more commercial in nature and would include local businesses posting audio tags about their business and what users might expect to find there. It would also enable people to get more information about a business as they walk by on their daily route, without doing anything extra ordinary like stopping and looking at an add, opening a web page on a browser, or going into the shop. This might need to be managed well in order to prevent overloading the user with nonsensical audio advertisement. Additionally this channel would be used for games like treasure hunting in open spaces and streets. Users would need to collect audio clues and explore areas in order to find and collect items/treasure. Users might also need to collaborate with each other in order to get some bigger prizes. Users could also win prizes for their local community and area, encouraging people to think of the community as a whole.Finally, the two uses could compliment one another by directing users to certain areas on certain days. For example, a treasure hunt on Thursday nights in a pub area would drive a lot of people to that area. The people could receive prizes and discounts to food and drinks in the local pubs.

Technical Details :
no special equipment would be needed. The user would just need his mobile phone and a software/subscription to the service. The audio would be activated by pressing a button. The audio would then follow the user as he moves from area to area.

Since audio quality on phones is not amazing and people don't like holding phones next to their ears for long periods while walking, we expect this system to be used with mobile devices that have good audio quality and are connected to ear phones. This system would work with any device ( audio players ) that also have a wifi or cellular network connection.

Relevant proofs of concept:
The 3 examples that we have, sound garden, flower power, and geoVector present experimental and working examples of this concept. Also, in terms of computation and system demands the project is feasible and not excessively demanding.Coupled with a good implementation and business plan we see good potential for this project.

( but what about the BLIND people ??! )

Our main concept is to examine people’s ordinary movement and manners. We wish to discover new ways to interrupt the regular behaviour of individuals. Through use of light and shadow we will create an environment with a focus on social issues and awareness. Our design will be incorporated into a public transitional space, which has a constant flow of people.

Shadow World:
Shadows are creatures that follow humans wherever they go near the metro area ..
sometimes they even get out of the metro and follow people longer ..
the shadows are on the floor .. but sometimes they 'jump' to the walls .. sometimes even to the ceiling ..
they come in different colors and shapes .. usually they are just dots .. on the floor .. but they sometimes grow and change ..
especially when they are on the walls ..
The shadows follow people .. make fun of people .. laugh dance sing ..
sometimes they follow each other .. they play with each other .. sometimes they fight ..
not all the people care what their shadows are doing .. but some do ..
they shadows are more interesting when they see that you care .. when you play with them ..
they follow you around more .. they they do more interesting things ... they give you more control over their movements ..
the shadows don't follow everyone .. why ? .. do they follow only interesting people ?
only sad people who need encouragement ?
but no .. sometimes the shadows are mean .. they are not always nice ..
what do they want ? they certainly have a mind of their own ..
I don't really know what they want .. but since they've appeared more people are stopping .. more people are looking around .. talking to each other .. some people are even creating music and games to play with the shadows ..
someone's even done some shadow graffiti on the walls ..

Billy is 6 years old .. Billy goes to the metro everyday .. he likes the shadows .. they have been appearing in the metro for a month now .. they are cute .. they sometimes make faces .. or jump and dance .. billy's friend is Bo .. Bo is billy's shadow .. Bo always walks with billy .. makes him laugh .. Bo is funny ..
Today Bo is not dancing .. Bo is more interested in other shadows today .. hmm .. billy wonders why .. maybe Bo is tired of me ? doesn't he like me anymore ? ... Look there's another kid .. but he's not playing with his shadow .. poor shadow .. Bo starts running .. hey .. Bo is chasing the other kid's shadow .. Look look they are jumping on one another .. Billy runs to see ..
Billy walks up to the other kid .. the other kid is now also interested in what's going on .. Billy and the other kid watch their shadows for a while .. Billy says : " hey I'm billy .. and this is Bo .. my shadow. What's your shadow's name ? " ..
" my shadow doesn't have a name . But my name is Eddie " says the kid.

eye tracking- shadow as trigger of interaction > move towards more complex form of displaying phenomena - digital shadow
people usually walk looking down. use the shadow cast on the floor .. then let the eyes follow it up
play with SCALE: larger scale ? car tunnels maybe ? train tunnels in stations ?
create a link between the individual and the 'display'/shadow/etc- look at shadow monsters on uTube
idea of funnel .. in a larger space the 'shadow' is not so clear .. as you go deeper into the tunnel .. the image gets more detailed and more interactive .. until you get into a narrow space where interaction is one-to-one.
